I wouldn't have a direction in life if it weren't for the people I met and the classes I took at Columbia Engineering. When I got to Columbia I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I started out with electrical engineering, quickly figuring out that I needed to do more soul searching. I took introductory courses in Environmental Engineering, IEOR, and Computer Science but it was listening to Professor Upmanu Lall explain his passion for the environment in Better Planet by Design that helped guide me towards sustainability. From there I had many conversations with my truly exceptional peers to discuss all aspects about the subject, sometimes over a meal in Carleton or in dorms. But it was the amazing mentors that I found in IEOR that helped me figure out my true love—the business of energy. When I figured things out, Columbia let me flex my technical and non-technical electives so that I was able to take whatever classes I thought would help my career. My mentors and advisors, both formal and informal, gave me a hand up and helped me both in my good days and my bad. I wouldn't be who I am without Columbia Engineering. Happy Birthday, SEAS!
